What Is Prescription Organic Matter©?

Prescription Organic Matter© (POM) is a mixture of biologically active organic compounds derived from prescriptive composting processes. High quality natural nutrients within POM© are screened to ensure integrity, consistency, and quality. Originally created by plants and other organisms, these compounds play a variety of roles in many biological cycles. The nutrients released from these former plants are 100% natural because of their original formation through photosynthesis.

There are different mixtures of POM© available for both fast and slow release of nutrients. Some POM© formulations also have a higher nutrient content than others because of their ingredients. For example, the POM© used on a residential lawn is a slower release formula that fertilizes your lawn as well as improves the biological activity in the soil.

Why Does Your Lawn Need Prescription Organic Matter©?

POM© provides your lawn with essential nutrients and benefits the soil creating better growing conditions. Not only are you providing your turf with the nutrition it needs by improving the natural soil biological processes, you are giving additional benefits, such as: improving soil structure over time, reducing the thatch layer (thatch is a dense layer of dead grass that accumulates at the soil surface), smoothing the soil surface, and helping with seed establishment.

How Does Prescription Organic Matter© Work?

The concentration of certain types of plant matter (leaves, twigs, wood chips, etc.) effects how quickly POM© breaks down and becomes available for plant uptake. When organic matter breaks down into very fine particles it becomes mineralized by soil organisms. At that point, the minerals become available to your lawn regularly. Applying a thin layer of POM© to your lawn over a period of time provides it with organic matter and biologically created nutrients necessary to growing healthier grass.

How Is Prescription Organic Matter© Applied?

Prescription Organic Matter© is applied using a top dressing machine which adds a fi ne layer of POM© to the lawn surface. The material used for top dressing can be POM© or a combination of POM© with sand, and/or other soil amendments. If your lawn started with unfavorable conditions; repeated top dressing over many years will eventually produce a superior turf with improved drainage, aeration, and resiliency. Top dressing is often used to moderate surface irregularities that result from traffic, climatic conditions, and turf grass growth. The top dressing is then incorporated into the soil surface through the use of brooming, raking, dragging, and/or irrigation.

Improving the soil with POM© creates better water drainage, decreases soil compaction, and promotes a more vigorous and healthy root system for your turf. Compacted soil with large amounts of clay - due to top soil removal - may benefit the most from top dressing practices. But, top dressing with POM© is a way to increase the natural quality of turf grass in any soil condition.
